Bana is a rural commune in the Haut-Nkam department, in the West Region of Cameroon. In this area, limited access to healthcare remains a serious problem; eye conditions are common and debilitating, as is the case in most low-income countries.
Globally, according to the World Health Organisation, visual impairment represents a major public health challenge. Around 2.7 billion people worldwide are affected by visual impairment, of whom 1.1 billion suffer from blindness or preventable visual impairment. Glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy are often the main causes, but these conditions are treatable or preventable with adequate access to healthcare.
In light of this situation, and in keeping with its commitment to the health and well-being of disadvantaged communities, Prosperien, in partnership with the IDIWAKA association, launched a campaign offering free eye consultations as well as general medical consultations for common conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. This eagerly awaited event took place on 23 and 24 May and enabled the team of international and local healthcare professionals to see around 500 patients.

Many beneficiaries, who often struggle with untreated vision problems, turned out in large numbers and expressed their immense gratitude for this initiative. They would all like to see the scheme repeated every year to meet their needs and improve their quality of life.

The doctors carried out comprehensive examinations, diagnosing a range of conditions and providing appropriate treatment. In addition, advice was given on eye care and disease prevention, along with guidance on essential practices for maintaining general health.
A post-campaign follow-up protocol has been put in place for patients requiring urgent care, particularly surgical intervention. Our local partners will play a vital role in this phase.

We would like to thank our main partner (the IDIWAKA association), our local partners (Banamed and the municipality of Bana), all the health centre managers, the participants and volunteers… Their invaluable cooperation, commitment and dedication played a key role in the organisation and success of this event.
